Why Buy an Inflatable Hot Tub?

People often wonder why they should buy an inflatable hot tub over a standard standalone hard hot tub. A portable hot tub might not seem like a good investment, but there are in fact many advantages to having one over a standard hard hot tub.

Cost

One of the biggest advantages that an inflatable hot tub has over a hard tub is affordability. If you’re looking to have an in-ground hot tub installed you’ll spend tens of thousands of dollars. Even an above ground hot tub will cost somewhere between $3,000 and $10,000 depending on size and quality. Those prices are out of the budget for many people, which is why inflatable hot tubs are a great option. They can be purchased for hundreds instead of thousands.

Portability

Another one of the great benefits of an inflatable hot tub is that it is portable. With an inground hot tub it is impossible to move after installation. Even a hard tub is typically hardwired in and installed on a concrete pad. With an inflatable hot tub, you can set it up and take it down whenever and typically wherever you want. If you move or want to take it to the family lake house, you can do just that.

Ease of Installation

Finally, portable hot tubs are very easy to install. If you order one online you can have it delivered to your house in just days. Set up for most models is extremely simple and it can be built and ready for use in under an hour. Compare that to days or weeks required to have a contractor come out and install a hard tub on site. Buy one now, and you could have it ready for a party next weekend!

What to Consider Before Buying a Portable Hot Tub?

You’ve read all about why inflatable hot tubs are a great option for your backyard this year, but still aren’t sure what to look for when buying one. Thankfully, to save you from countless more research and internet searches, we break down the top factors to consider before buying a portable hot tub.

Price

One of the first things you should consider before buying a portable hot tub is what your budget is. Inflatable hot tubs are more affordable than a standard hard tub, but even special features can drive the price of some up higher than others. Set a budget and stick to it!

Size & Seating Capacity

Size and seating capacity go hand in hand. First, you need to assess your yard and determine how much space you have for a hot tub. That will give you a better idea of what size hot tub you can look for. From there, determine how much seating capacity you’d ideally like to have. If you have a large family or entertain friends often, then you will want a hot tub with a higher seating capacity. If it’s just you and your spouse, you can look at something smaller

Power Source

One thing to definitely keep in mind is what type of power source you have readily available. Some of the hot tubs will only be able to run on electric and you will need to have a 110V or 220V electric socket to operate. If you’re looking to bring the portable hot tub on the road with you, look for one that can be powered by other means.

Weight

The whole point of buying a portable hot tub is so that you can move it around. If you buy a hot tub that is extremely heavy, even when emptied of water, you’ll find yourself limited. It’s important to check how much a hot tub weighs to ensure that it is in fact portable.

Type of Jets

Without jets, hot tubs are really just large bathtubs. That’s why the type of jets a hot tub features is something to consider. Bubble jets are the most common type of jet offered, but if you are looking for some serious hydro-therapy, you will need to look for the few models that come with hydro massage jets.

Warranty

With the lowered price, comes less durability. Even inflatable hot tubs made out of triple or quadruple thick material are likely to tear occasionally, or pumps will fail. Look for a hot tub that comes with a good warranty. Most come with a standard 90 day warranty, but some might offer extended options.

Included Accessories

When buying an inflatable hot tub, you want to make sure you have everything you need. That is why you need to check and see what is included. A hot tub might seem cheap, but if you need to buy a cover, ground cloth, pump, filter and additional cleaning solutions the cost can quickly add up. When you’ve narrowed it own to a few hot tubs, make sure that they included everything you need to get up and running.

Cleaning & Chemicals

Another thing to consider is the cleaning and chemicals that will be required to keep the water clear and hygienic. Finding a hot tub with a good filter is one way to cut down on the necessary cleaning that you are required to do.

Pool Heating Frequently Asked Questions

April 30, 2019 by admib

Below, you will find the frequently asked questions and answers to things you have always wanted to know about pool heaters. Even if you don’t own a pool heater, you might still have questions, such as how long do they last? What size do I need? Maybe you don’t have one and after reading these frequently asked questions – you want one!

What Size Pool Heater Do I Need?

This is really decided by location and pool size. Generally, the larger the pool then the larger the heater should be however your climate will determine how much your pool needs to be heated.
Here are the nitty gritty details: for rectangular pools which are smaller than 14x28ft you can use 80,000 BTUs. However, with a solar cover you can use the same heater for up to 18x36ft. For a pool that is bigger than 18x36ft, a pool heater of 100,000 BTUs is necessary. For round pools smaller than 22ft, then use an 80,000 BTUs pump and the same size pump can be used for pools up to 30ft with a solar cover. If the pool is 30ft+ then 100,000BTUs is needed.

How Long Do Heaters Last?

This is dependent on many factors from weather to location, however the main factor is maintenance. A high quality pump can last a lifetime. Without any care or attention, you can expect your heater to work for about 10 years.

How Long Will It Take to Heat My Pool?

In true pool heater fashion, this depends on size, location and climate: however, for a pool to reach 20 degrees Fahrenheit it would generally take 24 – 72 hours. Of course, the larger the pool then the longer it will take to heat and the colder the climate will take more time, too.

How Much Does It Cost to Heat My Pool?

By heating your pool with a pump, it can cost from $50-$150 a month but compared to electric and gas pool heaters, this can jump to $300+ a month – choice is really everything! Although gas does cost a fortune, up to five times the price in some cases, no pump can compare in speed to gas.

What’s the Coldest Temperature I Can Use My Pool Heater At?

The lowest temperature a pump will work at is 50 degrees Fahrenheit but with a specialized pump, it can work at 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Do I Need a Solar Cover?

Many people consider a solar cover to be somewhat of a hassle when they want to go for a swim however, it does save them about 50% of their energy bill.

Why Is My Heat Pump Leaking?

This is one of the most common questions asked, and in fact, it is uncommon for your pool pump to actually leak! More commonly, your pump is simply “sweating” with some natural condensation. However, if you do think your pump does have a leak, then test different areas to find the source of the problem.

Types of Pool Heaters

Pool heaters can be a great addition to your family pool. Not only does it lengthen the number of months you can use your pool, it also warms it up during peak swimming months. Purchasing a pool heater is a no brainer, but first you have to understand the different options out there on the market. Here are the four main types of pool heaters that you can purchase:

Gas Heaters

Pool heaters are available for both natural gas and propane. Natural gas pool heaters can generally be connected to an existing residential natural gas meter, whereas propane has heaters will need to be run from a storage tank. Keep in mind that propane storage tanks will need to be refilled regularly. These types of pool heaters are not always the most efficient, but they are usually cheaper than other types. They are also able to heat pools consistently and quickly, no matter the outdoor air temperature.

Electric Resistance Heaters

Electric resistance pool heaters generate heat through electric currents to warm the temperature of your pool. These can typically be purchased for under $2,000, which is still slightly more expensive than natural gas heaters. One of the benefits of electric resistance heaters is that they aren’t dependent on the air temperature to operate, but they will require circuit breakers. This means you might need to hire an electrician to wire the large amperage breakers to safely operate the pool heater.

Heat Pumps

There are two different types of heat pumps used to heat your pool: air-source and water-source. There’s no need to get into the nitty gritty details, just know that these heat pumps are very energy efficient. These types of pool heaters are also cheaper to operate due to this efficiency. The two drawbacks with heat pumps is that they are more expensive to purchase, typically costing upwards of $2,000, and they can take longer to heat up a pool. However, both air-source and water-source heat pumps are built to last with a lifespan of 20 years.

Solar Heaters

Solar panels are the most expensive pool heaters to operate, but they don’t have monthly operating expenses because they utilize the power of the sun to warm the water. These types of pool heaters are built to last and extremely energy efficient, but they do heat pool water very slowly.

What do you need to consider before buying a pool heater?

Now that you know all about the types of pool heaters, it’s time to take a look at the additional factors that need to be considered. Before purchasing a pool heater, you need to look at features like price, durability, maintenance and sizing. Only by taking into consideration all of these different factors can you select the best pool heater for your pool.

Price

Cost is one of the most important factors to look at when you are selecting a pool heater. You need to choose a pool heater that is within your budget. However, you also need to look into operating costs. Aside from solar panels, other types of pool heaters will require additional energy to operate and you’ll see this on your utility bills.

Durability

Price is something to keep in mind, but you also want to look at the durability of your choice. Heat pumps and solar panels are more expensive, but they can last up to 20 years. This means less replacement costs and increased durability. See our list of the top 10 durable pool heaters.

Size of Heater

You need to consider the size of your pool when selecting a pool heater. Electronic resistance heaters are not good for larger pools, whereas the other options are. Once you choose the type of heater that you want for your pool, you’ll need to have it sized. There are a variety of methods than can be used to calculate the size of a pool heater, but a call to your local pool store will help narrow it down.

Installation

When choosing a pool heater, ease of installation is another option to consider. Electric resistance and gas heaters will likely require bringing in a contractor to wire breakers or run additional gas pipe. Solar panels that double as a cover on your pool can be extremely easy and inexpensive to install.

Manufacturer Warranty

Most pool heater manufacturers offer a standard 90 day warranty with their products. That being said, it’s always nice if you can find one with an extended warranty.

Above Ground Pool Heater Buyer’s Guide

If you live in cold climates, then you probably dread the seasons when the water’s temperature starts becoming uncomfortable. If you’re tired of having to close your above ground swimming pool as soon as the weather gets cold, then you should consider the purchase of an above ground pool heater.

The most common above-ground pool heaters are gas pool heaters, solar pool heaters, and heat pumps.

Types of Above Ground Pool Heaters

Gas pool heaters

Gas pool heaters burn either natural or propane gas to heat your pool, and can increase the water temperature 30°F or more. They do so quite quickly, so they don’t have to run for very long. Gas pool heaters are very energy-efficient, running at up to 80-95% efficiency. Not only that, but they’re also designed to meet low NOx emissions requirement. Nitric Oxide (NOx) is a pollutant that causes smog and acid rain when produced in larged quantities. Gas pool heaters are thus totally eco-friendly.

Whether you choose a natural gas or propane gas model is dependent on the availability and prices of both in your area, as it doesn’t make a difference on the price of the pool heater.

Electric pool heaters work the same way, but use electricity instead of gas, and generally require more time and power to make the pool warmer.

Electric heat pumps

Electric heat pumps extract heat from the air and then pump it into the water. Like solar heaters, they are considered to be environmentally friendly.

Heat pumps transfer heat from the air to the water in your pool or spa by using a refrigeration cycle similar to that inside refrigerators and AC units. They heat the pool more slowly than a gas heater, but cost loss to operate, so their price tag is offset overtime by lower energy expenses (up to 80% savings over propane gas and 50-70% over natural gas). Another advantage to heat pumps is their safety, as you don’t have to deal with a combustible gas.

On the other hand, heat pumps become ineffective once the air temperature drops below 40°F, which makes their use more suitable for warmer southern climates.

Solar pool heaters

Obviously, solar pool heaters use solar panels to harness the sun’s energy and then heat your water. Therefore, they should only be considered if you live in an area with a lot of sun. Solar pool heaters need between 4 and 6 hours of direct sunlight a day to heat a swimming pool. How do they work? After your filter cleans the water, a pump sends the water though the panels to heat up and then directs it back into the pool. Alternatively, a solar blanket lets you cover your pool when you’re not using it, while taking advantage of any available sunlight to keep the water below the blanket at a comfortable temperature. Because of its benefits, a solar blanket can be used conjointly with any above ground pool heater, to retain the water’s warm temperature after having heated it up.

Solar heating equipment for above ground pools ranges from around $200 to $800, making them an affordable option. You also don’t have to worry about gas lines, electrical connections or material corrosion.

How to Choose the Right Above Ground Pool Heater For Your Needs

A heater can extend the use of your swimming pool by a couple of month, delaying the closing in colder seasons (most likely until late fall) and letting you open it earlier in the spring. They’re a great way to let you have an evening swim for those nights that would normally be too cold. In warmer climates, a heater can even let you keep the pool open all year round. All of this helps make your pool fun and enjoyable for you and your family throughout the year.

Nevertheless, choosing the right pool heater can get confusing, as there are many heaters on the market, with a lot of different labels. Sadly, your local pool supply stores likely only sell limited brands and will try to sell you one of the two brands that they carry (one of which might be their own “name brand” heater), regardless of whether or not it meets your requirements. As we will see below, you DO need to choose your pool heater while considering certain requirements. That is why we recommend buying your above ground pool heater on the Internet. Not only will you have the option to choose from all the models that exist, but you will also get a far better price than at retail (and for a piece of equipment that costs anywhere between $1,000 and $3,000, it can mean a difference of several hundred dollars!). Finally, all online stores that we recommend use the proper delivery equipment, so you don’t have to do any heavy lifting off the truck.

Now, here are the steps you will need to follow to choose the best above ground pool heater for your needs.

Step 1: Input

Above ground pool heaters are rates by BTU’s, which are a measure of heat energy. One BTU is the amount of energy required to heat one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. Above ground pool heaters have a lower BTU input than in-ground pool ones, because most above ground pool are smaller and thus have less water to heat. The BTU rating for above ground pool heaters is generally 100 000, sometimes less.

Because swimming pools come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and have to weather all kinds of climates, you need to calculate the number of BTUs needed to heat your particular swimming pool (and its specifications), in order to select the right heater. To do that, you will have to determine two variables:

1. Surface area

The principal job of a pool heater is to heat the pool faster than the rate at which heat is lost from the swimming pool. Once the ideal temperature has been attained, the pool heater will only run enough to compensate for the heat that escapes from the surface of water. As a result, the more surface area your pool contains through which heat can escape, the more BTUs your pool heater will need to produce to warm the water. Calculating the surface area of your pool is quite easy, all you need is one of the following calculations:

  • Round pools: radius (1/2 diameter) x radius x 3.14
  • Rectangular pools: length x width
  • Oval pools: 1/2 length x 1/2 width x 3.14
  • Rectangular pools w/ rounded ends: length x width x 0.8

2. Temperature rise

This is a calculation of your desired water temperature (the pool water temperature you want to reach) minus the average ambient air temperature (the average daily outdoor air temperature of the coldest month you plan on use your pool). For example, if your desired water temperature is 80 °F, and the outdoor air temperature in April (the month you want to start using your pool) is 55 °F, then your temperature rise would be 25 °F (80-55).

Now that you have both surface area and temperature rise, you can refer to the chart below to find how many BTUs your heater will need to heat your pool effectively:

Above Ground Pool Heater Chart to find required BTUs

The chart is based upon an assumed wind velocity of 3.5 mph. Totals should be multiplied by a factor of 1.25 for a wind speed of 5 mph, and by 2 for a wind speed of 10 mph.

Once you know the number of BTUs/hour required, you can finally compare above ground pool heater models based on their BTU output. The output can be found by multiplying the pool heater model’s input (also measured in BTUs) by the heater efficiency rating. Heater efficiency is usually provided by the manufacturer and is a percentage representation of the amount of energy a pool heater transfers to the water for each unit of energy (BTU) used to generate that heat (the input). All pool heaters are required by the US Department of Energy to have a rating of at least 78%, though some models go as high as 95%.

When selecting your pool heater, always go for a model with a BTU output slightly higher than your actual pool surface area and desired temperature rise require. The larger the BTU output of the pool heater, the quicker it will heat your pool water, which means less run time and longer overall life span of your material.

Step 2: Brands

There really are only three brands of above ground pool heaters: Hayward, Raypak and Pentair. All of them offer compact heaters with a minimal footprint, and are easy to install in almost any area.

Step 3: Heating times

The time it takes to heat your pool will vary from heater to heater. As a rule of thumb, the higher the BTU rating, the faster the water will heat. A lot of models offer a BTU rating ranging from 150 000 to 400 000, and although these are typically referred to as in-ground heaters, you can use them for your above ground pool as well. A great advantage of using such a model is that the heater will use less gas, as it takes less time to heat he pool. Even if a high-BTU model is more expensive, you’ll likely save on gas in the process.

Step 4: Style of ignition

There are two types of above ground pool heaters when it comes to the style of ignition: millitvolt pool heaters and electronic start pool heaters. The first one utilizes standing pilot light that must constantly stay lit to keep the heater process going on. The second one does away with the need for a pilot light, and instead initiates the heating mechanism electronically (it’s often referred to as “direct-spark ignition” or “hot surface ignition”). If you ask us, an electronic model offers far better benefits than the millivolt one. The drawback of the latter is that you may need to re-light the pilot light if it goes out, and if you’ve ever had to re-light a gas stove pilot, you know it needs to be done very carefully, if you want to avoid injury…

Step 5: Cost of using your pool heater

Gas pool heaters are relatively inexpensive (around $1,000), but if you have concerns about unpredictable factors like gas prices and lower than expected temperatures, you might want to consider other pool heating options, such as solar pool heaters or heat pumps (which run on electricity).

Step 6: Installation

Once you have had the product shipped to your place, all that remains to be done is finding a licensed electrician to wire the heater.
