10 Best Suction Pool Cleaners (June 2019) – Top Picks & Reviews

If you have a pool, the biggest annoyance can be trying to keep it clean so you can comfortably enjoy it. Most people utilize a pool maintenance company to do that task for them, but there are downsides to that. First, it means added costs to owning a pool. Second, those companies might not be able to squeeze you in right before that big pool party you spontaneously planned.

If you’re sick of paying a pool maintenance company to clean the leaves, bugs, debris, and more out of your pool, there’s another answer—a suction pool cleaner. These automatic machines utilize the pool plumbing infrastructure that’s already in place. By connecting to the suction surface of the plumbing, it works just like a vacuum cleaner.

That sounds great, but where do you even begin? There are so many different types of suction pool cleaners on the market and it’s easy to get confused by the different brands, models, and features. How long of a hose do you need? Is a booster pump important? How much do they cost? There are so many options, but thankfully, we’re here to break it down for you! We’ve scoured the internet and come up with the top three suction pool cleaners for you to consider.

Things To Consider When buying a suction Pool Cleaner

1. Pool Type

Suction pools have a fair demand on electricity, making them best suited to small and medium sized pools. That being said, this type of pump is ideal for almost all in – ground pools. This cleaner is perfect for vinyl, concrete, fibreglass or gunite. With gunite and concrete, be sure to check the vacuum specifications to make sure this works best for you.

2. Booster Pump

The cleaners are connected to the filtration system, in some cleaners a booster pump is needed to speed up the flow in the filtration system. It is important to decided if your filter needs a booster pump or not before choosing a cleaner!

3. Hose Type

This is so important as hoses are used during cleaning and are often bashed against the pool floor and walls. This can damage the hose and also the cleaner’s ability. Buying scuff resistant hoses can solve this problem!

4. Pool Floor and Wall Coverage

Ensure that the cleaner you purchase cleans not only the pool floor but also the walls. It is important to choose a cleaner which does not get trapped between the ladder or on the steps.

5. Cost

The cost of a pool cleaner is often in direct correlation to its efficiency. There are brand new technologies available such as: one moving part, aqua steering and smart drive. However, this new technology does come at a price. The more advanced the technology, the more expensive and the better the cleaner will be.

6. Noise

Some cleaners have a constant buzz while they’re cleaning which can prove irritating however some cleaners are silent. This is a choice of comfort and preference.

Without even reading this review I picked up the Hayward Poolvergnuegen cleaner about a year ago. The thing is great!
A year have passed, no major problems or support needed. Just set the suction level and let it work. Never had to untangle it’s hose or intervene in any way. We didnt clean our pool for months and its all gone now. Great!

We bought the Kreepy Krauly a few days ago – and here are some observations:

    1. We ran it for two days then it slowed down and completely stopped on the third day.
After cleaning it up from debris, etc. We tried to activate it for 30 minutes and it worked fine.

    2. Stabilizng the hoses with their weights has been a nightmare. Somtimes the front hoses sinks in the waterand then the cleaner
tilts strongly forward and sometimes it moves to the sideways. Didnt sort thr problem yet.
